About the English Shepherd Doodle
The English Shepherdoodle is a cross between an English Shepherd and a Miniature or Standard Poodle (not to be confused with an Old English Sheepadoodle, which is a cross between an Old English Sheep Dog and a Poodle.) English Shepherdoodles make great family dogs. Combining the English Shepherd's natural intelligence and family dedication with the Poodle's sense of fun and smarts creates an ideal family pet. Many make wonderful therapy dogs. They can excel in agility sports, obedience competitions, herding contests, doing tricks or any purpose you point them at. An occasional natural bob-tail English Shepherd may occur in some lines.
English Shepherds are a somewhat rare breed descending from working collie type dogs brought to America in the 17th-19th centuries by English and Scottish settlers. They were a great all purpose dog, being able to herd livestock, keep rodents at bay, watch little children and curl up by the fire at night. As the move to a more urban lifestyle became the trend, English Shepherds have been found to be great family companions, agility competitors, obedience and therapy dogs.
Size: English Shepherdoodles are typically a medium to large sized dog; size varies depending on the size of the poodle used in the cross. Most will weigh 40-65 lbs and range from 18-24 inches tall.
Temperament: The English Shepherdoodle makes a devoted family dog. Its background, coming from a traditionally dedicated working breed that is the English Shepherd and one of the most intelligent of breeds, the Poodle, lends itself to a dog that wants to be an interactive part of the family. They should show intelligence and alertness without being overly shy or nervous. The English Shepherdoodle is happiest when he gets plenty of exercise and can be with his family, escorting them to the park or watching the kids.
Coat Type: English Sheperdoodle coats come in a range of types, from wavy to curly. Grooming needs vary depending on coat type, with brushing for a wavy coat to professional clipping for curly haired dogs. Tails may be full (usually carried up with a curl) or they may be naturally docked.
